Training a Sociological Lens on Films

Cinema is a mirror to the society we live in. The film industry may present glamorous versions of our lived realities, but the films' level us contemplating the consequences of their widespread consumption.

The film industry produces one of the most popular forms of entertainment and the episteme of an entire generation is subconsciously formed through the consumption of (often problematic) narratives presented in films.

While attempting to figure out what sells and why, we invite you to take a sociological look at the films you consume; be that mainstream productions or more niche content.

We are calling for a critical perspective on widely popular movies and a new take that goes beyond just their mass appeal.

Themes to explore:

  • Romanticisation and/or normalisation of socially deviant behaviours.
  • Escapism. (eg: Films as a coping mechanism against mundane life.)
  • The power movies hold in today’s world. (eg: The creation and perpetuation of stereotypes)
  • Representation in films. A boon or bane? (eg: The recent scramble for diversity and inclusion in casting films)
  • The problems of inclusion in the film industry.
  • A look at nepotism in the film industry.

We would love to see your super long essays, short write ups, artsy illustrations, cool videos, rib-tickling comics and maybe even some hard hitting poetry!
